Industry Tips: "What makes a good manager?" x @BigAmptheqtrbk [Article]

In the current music business model as we know it, the role of the manager has changed. 10 years ago a
manager could sit back wait on phone call, stay on top of paper work, keep their client relevant & out of tax trouble and they were considered to be a good manager.

In more recent years the manager's role included more than just answering the phone. In my opinion a good manager has to be able to create opportunities and plant seeds that will grow later. Also they have to have real problem solving skills.

The business is hectic enough so without proper representation, an artist potentially will miss some exposure and revenue opportunities that might not be available again.  A few qualities a good manager should possess:
-Honesty
-Being a viable resource (business/personal)
-Have great communication
-Specialize in conflict resolution
-Focused on solutions
-Maintain a genuine humbleness.

This business is driven by relationships, so a manager needs to be able to flourish in various social, networking, business meeting situations. Top level and experienced professional managers are hard to find because it is actually a hard job that may look easy to the naked eye but its like doing 5 jobs for one salary. It is your career we are talking about so having great representation will be the difference often times when dealing with other executives.  Many people sign up for it until they see what it entails. So if you have a good manager appreciate them, work with them and be diligent as a client to provide the needs of your manager.
